Beginnings

Welcome to the Kim School of Discipleship!

I wanted this platform to document our journey as a minister's family, as a family who homeschools, as a family who takes sabbath.  There are so many facets to our lives, it's hard to categorize it as one thing, but hopefully, we can use this blog here to touch on each of these.

Sabbatical is right around the corner for us. Two weeks to be exact. I don't even know how its going to be or how I'm supposed to feel! I know that my husband is going through a lot of emotions. Fear, anxiety, then at the same time fear, joy, excitement at the thought of complete rest and time with the family.  My worries seem to be more related to our health and survival during the sabbatical. Where will we stay, what will we eat, what will we do?  My greatest fear is that the sabbatical will slip by and we will have missed something. All of the mentors and leaders we have been speaking to have really encouraged us to have a solid plan for sabbatical- what will be our daily rhythms, our weekly rhythms, our monthly rhythms. So that is my goal- to come up with a flow for our family while we are away. And most importantly, that this will be a flow that can continue when we return.

Daily Rhythm:  For our daily rhythm I am thinking along these lines:

For me:  Wake up early before the family to spend quality time with God and meditate in solitude and silence.  Spend a good hour or so in that space just communing with God.  Then I would love to share a cup of coffee with my husband and enjoy the rising sun. Then we can cook breakfast and get ready to greet the kids.

For the kids: Wake them up for breakfast. Enjoy breakfast together. Then lead them in a time of worship and prayer to start the day. Then PLAY! I mean outside good play. Sometimes it might be a hike, other times it might be just free play. But I really want them to enjoy a free time of playing. That is so lost in our day and time- I admit it, it's easy to let them just turn to devices. I'm hoping this will be time of freedom for them as well. After playing, we will prepare dinner together and then eat dinner. After dinner we can play board games and spend some family time hanging out, maybe reading a story together. Then we end the night with prayer of examen, documenting our day.
